There have been major changes made in the U.S. since the overruling of Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The power to decide on abortion laws is now given over to the states.
It can be difficult to keep up with the ever-changing state-by-state abortion laws. In this blog, we want to help you better understand abortion access and whether it’s legal where you live or not.
The Overturning of Roe v. Wade
Before we get into state abortion laws, what exactly did the overturning of Roe do in June? Roe v. Wade of 1973 stated it was a constitutional right for women to receive elective abortions. However, the most recent case of Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned this original decision because it lacked credibility and couldn’t be proven.
The overturning of Roe v. Wade makes abortion no longer federally protected by the US Constitution. Each state legislature determines the authority to allow or restrict abortions for themselves.
Where is Abortion Legal?
In many states, abortion remains legal, either fully or partially. Some states are more restrictive than others. Four states have a six-week ban, while others simply have abortion limits in place.
In Texas, abortion is currently banned, with no exceptions for rape or incest. See an in-depth state-by-state look at abortion state laws here.
Though abortion is legal in many states, it is now banned in at least 10 states. The following states have currently banned abortion:
- Alabama
- Arkansas
- Kentucky
- Louisiana
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Oklahoma
- South Dakota
- Tennessee
- Texas
Where Can I Go?
If you are considering traveling for an abortion, it’s helpful to first confirm your pregnancy with free pregnancy testing and ultrasound, which we provide at our center.
An ultrasound gives valuable information when considering abortion by confirming how far along you are, the viability and location of your pregnancy, and whether there are possible complications present.
Schedule a free and confidential appointment with us today to confirm your pregnancy with lab-grade pregnancy testing and an ultrasound. We can share more information on all your options!
