When Is the Right Time?
The best time to take a pregnancy test is after you’ve missed your period.
That’s because pregnancy tests detect a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which starts building in your body after a fertilized egg implants in the wall of the uterus. It takes time for hCG to reach levels high enough to be detected by a urine pregnancy test.
If you test too early—especially before your missed period—you might receive a false negative, even if you are pregnant. For the most accurate result, wait at least one day after your expected period and use your first urine of the day, when hCG is most concentrated.
What If My Period Is Irregular?
If your cycle is unpredictable, it can be harder to know when to test. In that case, wait at least four weeks from the last time you had unprotected sex. If you’re still not sure, count 36 days from your last period and test at this time.
